Captain Mike McNabb

Although I retired, after 30 years of teaching, in 2002 I am still teaching Driver Education and Physical Education part-time at Page High School. I spent 8 years teaching in Phoenix, Arizona and 27 in Page. While teaching, I coached track for 22 years, football for 5 years, basketball for 5 years and volunteered to coach baseball for 2 years. During my 27 years in Page, I have been a Volunteer Fire Fighter for 6 years, an EMT for 2 years, a Little League Coach for 4 years and a Boy Scout Master for 6 years. I also ran the Adult Volleyball, Basketball and Softball Program for the city for many years in the evenings and summer time.
My proudest accomplishment has been my family! I have a wonderful wife of 35 years. We have two sons, Sean (30) and Paul (28) and my pride and joy Tayler, my seven-year old granddaughter (pictured below). Yes, I do spoil her a little bit but isn’t that what grandparents are supposed to do?!
My boys grew up in Page and fishing on Lake Powell. Before they got involved in athletics we were out on Lake Powell fishing and playing 6 out of 7 days in the summer and in the spring and fall we were out there 2 or 3 days a week after school. Sometimes the teacher would play hooky from school! We always seemed to adopt two or three more sons when it was time to go to the lake. On Sundays my wife would have Sunday School for them on the boat while fishing. The boys called their church, “The Church of the Great Outdoors!” We have lots of great memories of good times on the lake.
We have caught probably thousands of fish on the lake over the years. My oldest son Sean would be the one to catch the most, actually my wife usually caught the most. She caught a 4.4 # smallmouth bass in May of ‘07, the biggest anyone has caught in our family!! My son Paul caught the biggest striper in our family: 15 1/2 pounds! I caught the biggest largemouth, weighing in at 7 1/2 pounds and a smallmouth that went 4.0#’s. It really didn’t matter who got the biggest by the time we got home at night, we just knew we had a great time.
My son Sean and his beautiful wife Kailie (pictured on the right) love getting up to Page to go fishing. Kailie had become quite a fisher”person”. Sean taught her how to fish and she goes on hunting trips with us. She doesn’t hunt but she sure has become good at fishing! She will bait her own hook and take her fish off (most of the time). My granddaughter Tay will bait her own hook, cast out, catch the fish and take them off the hook and loves catching crawdads. They both are amazing young ladies! Kailie has found out a little about roughing it. Before she met Sean she said “roughing it was when room service was late!”
Well, as you can see, I love doing things with my family, especially fishing. My life has and still does revolve around two things, besides work of course: God and my family. Going fishing has been a great activity for all of us to do when we get together as a family. Many times while on Lake Powell, we have looked around at the towering red sandstone cliffs and commented about how blessed we are to live so close to such a beautiful, unique surroundings.
I started my Lake Powell fishing guide business when I was told by the principal of my school in January ‘05, that I would not have a job the next year because the football coach would be taking over the Driver Ed classes. My wife and I talked about what to do next. I had my captain’s license from the coast guard so I started my business in March of ‘05 and it took off like gangbusters! The last day of school, the football coach quit, the principal called me into his office and asked if I would teach the next school year. I decided to continue teaching part-time and continue my fishing guide business. It had worked out very well these last three years.
I enjoy taking people fishing and sharing Lake Powell with my clients. I hope I’ll be able to take you out for a Lake Powell fishing experience someday! Thank you and God bless!
